Included in the Transportation Planning Division initiatives:

Roadways
Everett’s roadways carry not only private vehicles, but pedestrians, school children, cyclists and transit vehicles. The Transportation Planning Division aims to improve traffic flow and efficiency while also improving safety and access to residents who choose alternate modes of transportation. The City’s recently begun Complete Streets initiative is developing new guidelines and standards for street reconstruction projects that work to achieve these goals. The Division also evaluates development proposals to assess their impacts to traffic and develop any necessary mitigation measures.

Bicycles and Pedestrians
The City’s pedestrian and bicycle network is critical to providing transportation access to all residents, particularly those who are unable or choose not to travel by private vehicle. The recently completed Northern Strand Bike Path and bike lanes on lower Broadway are two examples of planning initiatives resulting in major improvements for pedestrians and cyclists in the City. Ongoing and future initiatives include pedestrian and bicycle improvements to local intersections and expansion of the trail network to the Mystic River as part of the Wynn project.

Transit
Eight MBTA transit lines serve the City and rank as some of the busiest bus routes on the MBTA system. Improving transit connections within the City and to downtown Boston is a top priority. Beginning in fall 2015, the City will be partnering with MassDOT to conduct a transit needs study that will develop short term and long term improvements to the existing transit network, as well as explore the feasibility of new rapid transit connections.

Regional Planning
Everett is a member of the Inner Core group of communities in the Boston Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). Additionally, the City holds one of two “at-large” seats on the MPO board which plays a key role in planning, and distributing federal funds for transportation projects in the region. Through its involvement in the regional planning process, the City has been awarded funding for the reconstruction of Ferry Street and pedestrian improvements near the Madeline English School and will continue to explore additional funding opportunities for transportation infrastructure.
