About the Role:
Data analysis work is performed under the continuing supervision of a Police Sergeant or higher-level officer in the Criminal Investigations Unit. This is law enforcement work assisting with the collection, collation, and analysis of crime data and the dissemination of analyzed crime information.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The following is a sample of the types of work that falls under the scope of this position.
Essential duties include, but are not limited to the following:
- Research, compile, and analyze crime and other data from a variety of sources.
- Analyze traffic accidents, noise complaints, and other non-crime quality of life issues.
- Utilize modern research methods, including research design and advanced statistical analysis to identify and evaluate crime series, trends and patterns.
- Organize and maintain manual information sources, files, and automated systems for storage and retrieval of data.
- Develop statistical information, forecast crime patterns, develop target profile analysis for various career criminals and provide investigative leads.
- Conceptualize and convert raw data to valid criminal intelligence information.
- Detect and understand the distinction between crime patterns and crime series.
- Collect and analyze crime reports, arrest data, modus operandi information, citation information, and other crime and criminal related data.
- Prepare and distribute information reports/bulletins/newsletters containing crime summaries and trend analysis to officers.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, or annual reports (including statistical reports and PowerPoint presentations) for the agency.
- Provide analytical support to operational divisions within department for strategic and tactical decisions based on needs and/or requests.
- Train department staff in tasks associated with the development and maintenance of the geographic information system (GIS).
- Analyze department data (field reports, NIBRS, supplemental reports) for completeness and accuracy, and make necessary corrections or updates.
- Forecast police activity volume in future months and years.
- Analyze the effectiveness of Department programs.
- Any other related tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or similar/relevant course work, or any combination of education and experience which would provide the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Some knowledge of law enforcement activities, crime definitions and Massachusetts General Laws.
- A working understanding of the National Incident Based Data Reporting System and the Criminal Justice Information System.
- Knowledge of Police Department Records Management Systems (such as Crime Tracks or IMC).
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs. Must be at the intermediate level or higher in Microsoft Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word. Practical experience building and manipulating data/databases in Access strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft MapPoint, ArcGIS or similar mapping software. Intermediate level or higher proficiency with ArcGIS strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of standard social media platforms and current technologies available to use and monitor them.
- Ability to analyze offenses, identify similarities, and reach logical conclusions based on such information.
- Ability to coordinate and integrate knowledge from various sources.
- Ability to work with sensitive/confidential information and ability to maintain confidentiality of such information.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, government officials, and the general public.
- Ability to deal courteously and authoritatively with the public.
- Possession of a valid Massachusetts driver’s license and an excellent driving record.
- Ability to pass a comprehensive background investigation.

- Ability to work in an office setting and attend in-person meetings; some evening or weekend hours may be required
- Occasionally lift or move office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.
