Duties and Responsibilities:

The City of Everett is seeking a motivated, skillful, and energetic professional to fill a critical leadership and management position to serve as the Everett Public Libraries. The Everett Public Libraries consist of the Parlin Memorial Library and the Shute Memorial Library, and the Director must oversee the successful management and operation of both.
The successful candidate for the position of Library Director must exemplify positive managerial skills and leadership through collaboration with the Library and City staff. In addition, the position requires extensive knowledge of library science, services, and procedures and demonstrated communication skills, an innovative mindset, and an ability to interact with the public positively.

The Library Director, in conjunction with the City administration, will be responsible for the development and implementation of important initiatives and long-range plans.

The Library Director serves as a liaison to the advisory Library Board of Trustees. The Library Director is required to attend the Board’s monthly meetings, deliver to the Board updates pertaining to the Everett Public Libraries and take into consideration the Board’s suggestions.

The Library Director must regularly engage the public, ensuring that the Everett Public Libraries are best serving the wants and needs of their numerous patrons, including the ability to seek information on ways that the library may increase its collections and services to reflect the diversity of the Everett community in culturally respectful ways. Therefore, the successful candidate will be required on occasion to attend evening and weekend meetings and events.

Education and Experience

  • Ten years of experience as a librarian or work in the field of Library Science.
  • Five years of managerial experience.
  • Certificate of Professional Librarianship issued by the Board of Library Commissioners
  • Master of Library Science or Master of Library and Information Science from an A.L.A. accredited institution.

Working Conditions:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 40% sitting, 30% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and in a generally hazard free environment
