Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform diversified duties to render professional nursing services and health education for the City of Everett.
  • Conduct Health screening of all students entering schools in compliance with Massachusetts General Laws.
  • Maintain all students’ health records, including weight and measurement data, hearing and vision data, and postural screenings.
  • Prepare and oversee the operation of the immunization clinics. Maintain records of all immunizations.
  • Monitor communicable diseases in schools; record data in individual students’ health records and the Board of Health records.
  • Coordinate physical exams of all fourth and eighth-grade students; proper mail forms to parents, schedule appointments for exams to be done at the Board of Health, and participate in those examinations.
  • Responsible for the administration of medications for students during school hours.
  • Maintain records of handicapped students; disseminate information on handicapped students to proper authorities as required.
  • Administer emergency first aid as needed.
  • Consult with parents on the health needs of students and refer to other medical authorities as necessary.
  • Coordinate with classroom teachers, guidance counselors, principals, and social workers on child abuse or neglect cases.
  • Develop and oversee activities in the TB clinic.
  • Schedule appointments, conduct tests, maintain records, and coordinate with other agencies as necessary.
  • Conduct follow-up procedures for patients of clinics as needed.
  • Orient foreign-born refugees to testing and other services of the clinic.
  • Coordinate preventive programs at the Board of Health Clinic, including immunization and educational program.
  • Participate in the interview and recommend a selection of staff nurses.
  • Assign nurses to public and parochial schools. Train new nursing staff members and conduct staff meetings as necessary.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Public Health on the budget for the department.
  • Maintain supply inventory for nursing services and distribute to schools as necessary.
  • Provide consultation to Superintendent of Schools, principals, teachers, and parents in all matters concerning public health.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Education and Experience

  • Three (3) to five (5) years of nursing and public health experience.
  • Current Registered Nurse licensure.
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification from a recognized provider.

Working Conditions:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 40% sitting, 30% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and in a generally hazard free environment
