Summary of Position:
The Department of Public Works Urban Forestry seeks applicants interested in the full-time position of Tree Laborer. Under the direction of the City Arborist the responsibilities of the Tree Laborer will consist of performing a variety of manual tasks related to the care, planting, trimming, pruning, spraying, fertilizing and removal of trees within the city.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs skilled manual labor in connection with the general care of trees where climbing or aerial lift operation or the use of specialized powered or un-powered tools may be required.
- Properly and safely removes plants, transplants and cares for the city trees, including through pruning, spraying, cabling, watering, staking, and other techniques as required.
- Operates, where applicable trucks/motor vehicles, aerial lifts, chippers, stump machines, chain saws, air excavation equipment and other air gas or diesel-powered equipment as required.
- Maintains equipment and vehicles in good operating condition, which includes but not limited to; sharpening chain saw and chipper blades, keeping vehicles and equipment free of dust and dirt debris, proper storage, care of equipment and reporting abnormalities as required.
- Performs miscellaneous related duties involving climbing, aerial lift operation, removing debris from roofs and trees, photographing and inspecting tree canopies, destroying hornet’s nests, cutting grass, pulling weeds, raking leaves and any other duties related to the care of City trees.
- Other duties as assigned by the City Arborist
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, which may at times include evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime
- Knowledge of ANSI A300 Tree Care Standards including but not limited to proper tree pruning, planting and care techniques.
- Knowledge of Z133 safety standards
- Considerable knowledge of tree climbing, trimming, treatment and removal method needed to safely maintain on and remove city trees in a dense urban environment, around electrical utilities, public streets and a variety of other obstacles without causing damage to city or private property.
- Knowledge and ability to tie related knots, care for and manage ropes, riggings and tools commonly used in tree care and removal operations.
- Ability to use and operate a variety of tools and equipment, including climbing and descending ladders, using hand tools, aerial lifts, brush chipper, chain saw, utility machinery, line trimmers, and various other hand and power tools.
- Ability to follow directions, manage multiple work assignments and complete them accurately and in a timely fashion, resolve problems, work as part of a team, be able to receive and give constructive criticism.
- Ability to make sound decisions and exercise good judgment in the absence of supervision.
- Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with the general public, board members, supervisors, other city employees, construction contractors and all others.
- Knowledge of tree identification strongly preferred
Entrance Requirements:
- Must pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen, reference check, driving record check and CORI/SORI check
- Subject to random drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment
- Must show a minimum of 1 year experience in professional arboriculture or a related field
- Must present a valid Department of Transportation medical certificate
Physical Demands/ Work Environment
This position is performed in both indoor and primarily outdoor settings, in adverse weather conditions and requires the ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time including bending, stooping, sitting, standing, reaching, pulling and walking for an extended period. Perform occasional and repetitive lifting of loads of 25-100lbs as required by the job in all types of weather conditions, in a moderate to high noise environment and in an often challenging high-stress environment.
