Position Summary:
The Everett Recreation Center is seeking a passionate and dedicated Part-Time Youth Basketball Coach to lead and develop young athletes in both our recreational league and competitive travel basketball league. The coach will be responsible for planning and running practices, teaching basketball fundamentals, fostering teamwork, and promoting good sportsmanship. This position requires a strong understanding of the game, the ability to motivate and mentor youth (ages 6-14), and excellent communication skills. The coach will also coordinate with staff, manage team logistics, and ensure a safe, positive, and inclusive environment for all participants.
This role involves working evenings and weekends during the basketball season, with potential travel for league games and tournaments. Ideal candidates will have prior coaching or playing experience, a commitment to youth development, and the ability to inspire a love for the game in young athletes.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement age-appropriate practice plans that focus on skill development, teamwork, and basketball fundamentals (dribbling, shooting, passing, defense).
- Prepare teams for both recreational league games and travel league competition by teaching game strategies, positioning, and rules of basketball.
- Lead and manage the team during games, ensuring player rotation, game strategies, and positive encouragement for all players.
- Attend both home and away travel league games and tournaments as needed.
- Foster an environment that encourages positive sportsmanship, teamwork, and respect for others.
- Provide individual feedback to players to help improve their skills and confidence on and off the court.
- Collaborate with Everett Recreation Center staff on scheduling practices, games, and any other league-related activities.
- Communicate regularly with parents and guardians about team progress, schedules, and expectations.
- Ensure a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment during practices and games.
- Monitor the physical and emotional well-being of all players, adhering to health and safety guidelines.
- Ensure all equipment is properly set up and maintained for practices and games.
- Assist in organizing and cleaning up the gym or practice area after sessions.
- Keep track of attendance, player statistics, and game outcomes as necessary for both recreational and travel leagues.
- Contribute to the overall mission of the Everett Recreation Center by supporting the personal development of players and promoting the value of recreational sports in the community.
- Participate in any required training, coaching clinics, or meetings to enhance coaching skills and stay up-to-date with program requirements.
Minimum Entrance Requirements:
- Prior experience playing or coaching basketball, with a strong understanding of the game’s fundamentals, rules, and strategies.
- Experience working with children and youth (ages 6-14), preferably in a sports or recreational setting.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, motivate, and mentor young athletes.
- Ability to communicate clearly with youth players, parents, and recreation staff, both verbally and in writing.
- Willingness to work as part of a team, collaborating with other coaches, staff, and program administrators.
- Passion for teaching life skills, sportsmanship, and teamwork through basketball.
- Ability to commit to evening and weekend practices, games, and travel for league play.
- Must pass a background check in accordance with city and state guidelines for working with youth.
- Certification in CPR/First Aid or willingness to obtain certification prior to the start of the season.
Physical Demand and Work Environment:
Physical Demands:
- Must be physically capable of demonstrating basketball techniques, including running, jumping, and bending during practices and games.
- Ability to stand and move for extended periods during practices, games, and tournaments.
- May be required to lift and carry sports equipment, such as basketballs, cones, and gym materials, up to 25 lbs.
- Occasional need to adjust and set up basketball hoops or other training equipment.
Work Environment:
- The majority of work is performed indoors in a gymnasium or recreation center.
- Exposure to varying noise levels during practices and games, as well as fast-paced activities involving groups of children.
- Occasional outdoor activities for practices or events may occur.
- Evening and weekend hours required, with potential travel to off-site games or tournaments.
- Must be comfortable working in a physically active and dynamic environment, often managing a group of excited and energetic youth.
