Position Summary:

The Fleet Superintendent is responsible for the management, maintenance, and repair of the City of Everett’s fleet of vehicles and equipment. This position oversees the daily operations of the Fleet Maintenance Division, including scheduling, budgeting, and supervision of staff to ensure that all vehicles and equipment are safe, reliable, and in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage the preventative maintenance and repair program for the City’s fleet, including police, fire, DPW, and other municipal vehicles.
  • Supervise, schedule, and evaluate fleet maintenance staff, including mechanics and administrative personnel.
  • Ensure all vehicles and equipment are maintained in compliance with safety regulations and environmental standards.
  • Develop and monitor the division’s budget, including procurement of parts, materials, and services.
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, maintenance, and inspections for all vehicles and equipment.
  • Coordinate with City departments to schedule vehicle and equipment service with minimal disruption to operations.
  • Manage fuel distribution and tracking systems.
  • Oversee the disposal of surplus vehicles and equipment.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for fleet operations and preventative maintenance programs.
  • Prepare reports and provide recommendations on vehicle replacements and upgrades.
  • Ensure compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
  • Respond to emergency situations involving City vehicles or equipment, including after-hours calls when necessary.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in fleet management, automotive repair, or a related field, including supervisory experience.
  • Valid Massachusetts Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Knowledge of diagnostic tools, vehicle maintenance software, and fleet management systems.
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and fleet management software.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of gasoline, diesel, and hybrid vehicle systems, including engines, transmissions, electrical systems, and hydraulics.
  • Understanding of inventory management and procurement processes for parts and equipment.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety regulations, including OSHA, DOT, and EPA standards.
  • Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical issues.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with staff, vendors, and other City departments.
  • Ability to interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Analytical skills to develop maintenance schedules and assess vehicle lifecycle costs.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports and documentation.

Physical Demand and Work Environment:

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions and environments.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, and kneel for extended periods.
