Position Summary:

  • General laborer to assist varying departments within DPW with assorted work assignments and projects.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Litter and garbage control throughout City Park System.
  • Facility maintenance tasks include janitorial cleaning, building repairs, and vandalism repairs.
  • Athletic field maintenance tasks such as dragging and lining baseball and soccer fields.
  • Groundskeeping tasks include push-mowing, raking, weeding, edging, and line trimming.
  • Assist with minor carpentry, painting, plumbing, and irrigation repairs as needed.
  • Safely operate hand tools and assigned power equipment.
  • Safely use chemicals, paint products, solvents, etc.
  • Perform other related job duties as required to maintain City Parks or property.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with the public, supervisors, and other City staff.
  • Ability to complete assigned tasks or projects promptly.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Applicants must be reliable and arrive for an assigned shift on time.
  • Demonstrated ability to positively and effectively interact with diverse individuals to accomplish a common goal.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

  • Valid Drivers License, High School Graduate or Equivalent

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to operate a variety of tools and equipment, including hand tools, brush chipper, lawnmowers, utility machinery, line trimmers, and various other small power tools.
  • Ability to follow directions, manage multiple work assignments and complete them accurately and in a timely fashion, resolve problems, work as part of a team, and receive and give constructive criticism.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and exercise good judgment in the absence of supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with the general public, board members, supervisors, other village employees, construction contractors, and others.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods in all types of weather conditions.

Physical Demand and Work Environment:

  • This position is performed in both indoor and outdoor settings, possibly in adverse weather conditions, and requires the ability to bend, stoop, sit, stand, reach, pull, walk for an extended period, and perform occasional or repetitive lifting as required by the job.
  • Requires the ability to lift loads of up to 50 occasionally.
  • Requires the ability to climb and descend a ladder.
  • Requires the ability to operate/use hand tools, motorized vehicles, and equipment.
  • Requires the ability to communicate verbally with citizens and other staff members effectively.
