The City of Everett is proud to celebrate Black History Month with a series of free, inclusive and interactive events throughout February. These programs invite residents to honor the history, achievements and lasting contributions of Everett’s Black community while learning more about notable Black leaders who helped shape our city.

All events are open to the public, and everyone is welcome to attend.

Plaque Dedication Honoring Matthew Bullock

Join the City of Everett’s Historical Commission and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Department for a plaque dedication honoring Matthew Bullock, a trailblazer in Everett’s history.

Matthew Bullock was the first African-American coach of a predominantly white high school football team. After enrolling at Everett High School in 1896, he became a standout student and athlete. In 1899, Bullock was selected as player-coach and led the team to Everett High School’s third state championship.

His impact extended far beyond athletics. Bullock later:

  • Attended Dartmouth College

  • Served as Athletic Director at Morehouse College and Alabama A&M

  • Worked as an Assistant Massachusetts Attorney General

  • Received an honorary degree from Harvard Law School

All are encouraged to attend and help honor Bullock’s remarkable legacy.
