Position Summary:

Under the general direction of the Engineering Department, and the Department of Public Works, this position will serve as an essential element of the expanding City Engineering Staff. The Jr. Civil Engineer’s focus will be administration and compliance monitoring of infrastructure work done within the City of Everett. The position will include both office and field work. Assignments will require knowledge of basic construction principles and an understanding of subsurface infrastructure and public utilities. Candidates must have experience interacting with the public and responding to constituent issues.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Administer and inspect City infrastructure projects under the supervision of the City Engineer and the Department of Public Works.
  • Interface with Public Utilities regarding planning, scheduling, permitting, and quality control for utility projects within the City.
  • Perform inspections of private construction projects within the City for conformance with City approvals, construction standards and acceptable engineering practices.
  • Perform reviews of bid documents.
  • Prepare construction estimates.
  • Review contractor payments and invoices.
  • Track project progress, and prepare status updates.
  • Prepare and track project punch lists.
  • Review and track Engineering Department permit applications (Street Opening, Trench).
  • Represent the City in meetings with contractors and also residents.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Two to five years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering/Engineering Technology from an accredited institution preferred.
  • Experience with Public Utility projects (NatGrid, Verizon, Etc.) preferred.
  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Ability to recommend project management software.
  • Knowledge of construction standards and building codes.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Ability to work independently, and a part of a team in fast-paced environment.
  • Municipality experience a plus but not required.
  • Must have high attention to detail, willingness to learn and great people skills.
  • Excellent people skills, conflict management and resolution skills needed.
