Position Summary:
The Local Building Inspector enforces Commonwealth of Massachusetts Regulations and enforces the City of Everett’s Zoning Ordinances and any other applicable City Ordinances. Reviews applications and inspects building construction prior to issuing permits for new construction, alterations, or repairs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Establish short-range plan and objectives within the scope of City-wide policies
- Enforce and interpret code regulations
- Refer questions relating to legal aspects of zoning ordinances to the City Solicitor
- Responsible for administrative, supervisory and technical work in connection with the interpretation, processing, and enforcement of the building, electric, gas, plumbing and sanitary codes and zoning ordinances
- Review all plans and specifications for construction, renovation, alterations, repairs and additions within the city to ensure compliance with the Massachusetts State Building Code and City zoning ordinances
- Interpret and enforce the zoning ordinances of the City of Everett, Massachusetts General Law, the Massachusetts State Building Code and other applicable laws and codes
- Oversee and perform field inspections to verify work is being performed in accordance with approved plans and applicable law
- Coordinate with the Health Department and Fire Department on compliance with applicable laws and codes
- Oversee the insurance of all department related permits and certificates including occupancy permits. Maintain records of permits and certificates issued
- Maintain a variety of reports and records prepared by building department personnel
- Prepare and recommend annual department budgets and administer approved funds
- Participate in the selection of department staff as well as schedule and provide overall supervision and training of staff
- Perform other duties as required
Minimum Entrance Requirements:
- At least five (5) years’ experience in the supervision of building construction or design supervision or in the alternative a two-year Associates Degree in a field related to building construction or design, or any combination of education and experience which would confer equivalent knowledge and ability, as determined by the Board of Building Regulations and Standards (BBRS).
- General knowledge of the accepted requirements for building construction, fire prevention, light, ventilation, safe egress; as well as a general knowledge of other equipment and materials essential for safety, comfort and convenience of occupants of a building or structure.

- Candidates must have the ability to interpret, apply, and enforce building codes and zoning laws; excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Hold a valid MA Construction Supervisor license and a valid driver’s license.
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Must be amenable to obtaining Local Building Inspector certification within 12 months of employment, training will be provided
Physical Demand and Work Environment:
Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time, walking, stair climbing, driving, and carrying up to 50 pounds
