About the Role:
This position transports adults 60+ to and from The Connolly/Senior Center using a 12-passenger van with a wheelchair lift. Some transportation assignments may include taking older adults on field trips that are longer driving distances (30-90 minutes oneway).
Position Summary:
Essential duties of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Inspect the van prior to operation to ensure safe operating conditions; notify supervisor of any operational or repair problems;
- Fuel and maintain van, including appropriate disposal of trash and ensuring that van is clean and presentable to the public at all times;
- Pick up and drop off passengers at designated locations;
- Assist passengers to safely board, ride and exit the van with their belongings, including securing wheelchairs on the van as needed;
- Operate vehicle safely, obey traffic laws and state/federal transit regulations;
- Hear and communicate clearly while van is in motion, utilizing radio, intercom speaker, or own amplified voice as needed;
- Must be courteous, helpful, patient and professional at all times;
- Complete and submit essential paperwork – rider logs, inspection reports, etc.;
- Report any accidents and medical emergencies immediately, requesting police or ambulance service as needed; assist passengers until services arrive; complete required accident reports;
- Meet and maintain all motor vehicle safety requirements per applicable OSHA safety standards; notify the proper authority in cases of mechanical failure, safety deficiencies, when off schedule, or other incidents;
- This position may assist as required with occasional light physical labor tasks at the Council on Aging center, such as providing support in the kitchen
- May be required to make and confirm reservations with passengers
- Schedule pick up and drop off times and route
Minimum Entrance Requirements:
- Completion of high school education or GED;
- Experience driving a passenger van and familiar with all safety precautions;
- Valid Massachusetts Class D driver’s license and good driving record;
- Upon hire, this position will require the following training courses and subsequent re-certifications without lapse to remain in compliance with MassDOT regulations:
- Passenger Assistance Training (Accessible Lift Use and Passenger Securement & Disability Awareness);
- Defensive Driving;
- CPR, First Aid and Bloodborne Pathogens;
- Substance Abuse Awareness Training.
This is a safety-sensitive position. Pre-employment screens include a CORI/SORI background check, Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) driving history check, drug screen, and physical examination.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
This position requires the ability to problem-solve, complete routine forms, follow safety practices and procedures, and carry out instructions; the knowledge of and ability to navigate Everett neighborhoods and surrounding areas in a passenger van; knowledge of and adherence to all local, state and federal traffic laws and regulations. Multi-lingual skills in Spanish, Portuguese or Haitian-Creole a plus.
Physical Demand & Working Environment:
The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:
- Ability to work in a variety of outdoor conditions, with exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, snowy and windy weather conditions; job may require operating van in potentially hazardous driving conditions, such as snow, wind, sleet, and hail;
- Ability to operate a wheelchair lift to load/unload passengers, and help passengers with diverse physical abilities and assistive devices safely navigate entering, seating and exiting a vehicle;
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; climb and descend stairs; feel, handle and reach; bend, stoop, kneel and pivot; and talk and hear.
- The employee must be physically able to perform and demonstrate emergency evacuation procedures and communicate effectively and positively with staff and passengers.
- Must be able to push/pull up to 50 pounds independently.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, night/dusk vision, color vision, and peripheral vision.
