Position Summary:

As the Youth Development assistant for the City of Everett, you will play a pivotal and dynamic role in shaping the youth community’s recreational as well as workforce development experience. This position demands a passion for youth development in sports and enrichment classes, and a flexible schedule, including afternoons and weekends. Collaborating closely with the Recreation Department as well as the Youth Workforce, you will contribute to planning and executing diverse programs, from coaching sports to facilitating educational workshops, to expanding the career opportunities for the youth of the city. Your versatility will shine as you seamlessly transition between various roles within the recreation center, ensuring a positive and inclusive environment. With a commitment to fostering connections beyond activities, you will engage with youth, creating a supportive space that encourages personal growth, teamwork, and community building. This role is not just about leading recreational programs; it’s about making a lasting impact on the lives of the youth in Everett, MA.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Youth Program Facilitation:
    • Plan, organize, and actively engage in the implementation of diverse recreational programs, including sports, arts and crafts, and educational workshops, to meet the unique needs and interests of the youth community.
  • Coaching and Instruction:
    • Provide coaching and support in various youth sports activities, fostering skill development, teamwork, and a positive attitude towards physical fitness.
  • Workforce Development:
    • Work closely with the Director of Youth development and the Assistant Workforce Development Director to expand the working opportunities for the youth of Everett by actively pursuing new relationships with worksites, developing the youth through mock interview processes and helping them develop business acumen skills.
  • Versatility in Roles:
    • Seamlessly transition between different responsibilities within the recreation center, including program coordination, event support, and administrative tasks.
  • Youth Engagement and Mentorship:
    • Build positive relationships with youth participants, serving as a mentor and role model, and contribute to creating a supportive and inclusive environment.
  • Collaboration:
    • Work collaboratively with the Recreation Department Leader, other recreation staff, volunteers, and community partners to ensure the success and continuity of recreational programs.
  • Positive and Inclusive Environment:
    • Foster a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere within the recreation center, where all youth feel respected, valued, and encouraged to participate.
  • Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate records of program participation, feedback, and outcomes, and provide insights to evaluate program effectiveness and suggest improvements.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

  • 3 plus years previous experience in organizing and leading recreational programs for youth.
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred, but not required. Experience in lieu of degree will be considered.
  • Basic computer and MS Office skills.
  • Bilingual candidate preferred.
  • Basketball referee preferred. If not, willing to obtain within 6 months.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).

Physical Demands & Working Environment:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. In addition, the employee frequently is required to stand, walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. This job’s specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. In addition, this position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.
