The Everett City Council will welcome a new member following the resignation of Councilor-at-Large Wayne Matewsky, who stepped down from his position at the conclusion of the Council’s May 26 meeting.
Under the City Charter, vacancies in at-large seats are offered to the person who got the next highest vote from the most recent municipal election, provided the candidate received at least 20 percent of the vote. Former Mayor and City Councilor John Hanlon, who was the eligible runner-up candidate, has accepted the appointment.
Hanlon brings extensive experience in municipal government, having previously served as a former Everett Alderman, City Clerk, Mayor, and City Councilor. At this January’s Inauguration, he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his decades of service to Everett. He has been serving in the interim and will be officially sworn in shortly.
The appointment ensures that the City Council will continue to operate with a full complement of members as it addresses ongoing municipal priorities and community initiatives.
