Position Summary:
The incumbent works under general supervision performing skilled work in the construction and maintenance of water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform preventative and corrective maintenance to the water distribution and wastewater collection systems. Includes but not limited to water mains, services, hydrants, valves, meters, and sewer mains
- Responsible for quality of work performed by the crew in the absence of a working foreman or Supervisor
- Maintain logs and documentation of all maintenance done on the city’s water distribution and wastewater collections system.
- Maintain, Install, and repair valves, hydrants, services, mains and water meters
- Operates valves for valve exercising, planned shut downs, and emergency situations
- Operate hydrants during hydrant flushing, preventive maintenance, or corrective maintenance. Record flows, and identify any repair needed.
- Collect samples as needed
- Enters confined spaces using gas detectors, blowers, harnesses and tripods in accordance with established safety procedures
- Operate equipment and motorized vehicles such as: dump truck, vactor truck, jet truck, valve truck compressors, jackhammers, saws, drills, electric, pneumatic, and hydraulic powered tools and similar equipment and tools.
- Restore roads, sidewalks, and other work sites to original condition after work has been completed
- Perform safety inspections of all equipment
- Clean and maintains tools and equipment.
- Share rotational on call/ stand by duties, which includes being available 24/7 nights, weekends, and holidays
- Respond to all after hour water emergencies
- Perform Dig Safe mark outs
- Knowledge of proper water and Sewer pipe repair practices
- Knowledge of proper valve, hydrant, and service repair and installation techniques
- Ability to use and understand all computer programs used by the Water & Sewer Departments
- Ability to read basic water department maps and records
- Ability to follow directions of supervisors
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of proper methods, materials, tools and equipment used in water and wastewater collection systems maintenance and construction
- Knowledge of hydraulics and basic principles of a water distribution and wastewater collections system
- Working knowledge of OSHA regulations, Including: experience with trench work, shoring, and confined space entry
- Knowledge of proper water and Sewer pipe repair practices
- Knowledge of proper valve, hydrant, and service repair and installation techniques
- Ability to use and understand all computer programs used by the Water & Sewer Departments
- Ability to read basic water department maps and records
- Ability to follow directions of supervisors
Minimum Entrance Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Mass driver’s license
- Valid and active MA license with no infractions in the past 5 years
- CDL Class B license, or must be attainable in the first 6 months of employment, with Air Brakes Endorsement
- 5 years of experience performing water /wastewater construction and maintenance work.
- Confined Space Entry Trained
Physical Demand and Work Environment:
- Most work is out of doors; therefore, the incumbent is often exposed to poor weather conditions
- Physical demands may include: climbing, crawling, heavy physical labor, kneeling, crouching, lifting, carrying, and/or pushing objects weighing up to 90 pounds
- Operating manual and power hand tools, operating light and heavy construction equipment,
- Working in cramped spaces, working outside and underground
- May be exposed to dust, dirt, electrical hazards, high or low temperatures, noise, toxic materials, vibration, wetness, humidity, traffic hazards and confined space work
