Mayor Robert J. Van Campen released the following statement in response to an Order to Show Cause issued by the Massachusetts State Ethics Commission.
“I am aware of an order issued today, Wednesday, April 29, by The State Ethics Commission describing serious allegations regarding certain longevity payments under the prior administration. While this is part of an ongoing adjudicatory process with a state oversight agency, the findings raise significant concerns about the improper use of public office, taxpayer funds and a lack of transparency.
The Commission alleges that certain longevity payments violated the state ethics law because they were improperly received and some of those payments were concealed. These findings should concern anyone who expects an accountable government.
The City of Everett is reviewing the findings closely and will continue to follow the process as it moves forward. But the standard here is clear: there is no place in Everett for the misuse of taxpayer dollars or the use of public office for personal gain.
The people of this city deserve straightforward, accountable and transparent government. Rebuilding that trust has been a priority from day one, and that commitment remains unchanged.”
The State Ethics Commission has initiated formal proceedings, and a public hearing is expected as part of that process. The City will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as appropriate.
